Program:
The best of La Bohème.
Get ready for goosebumps and misty eyes as Tivoli Copenhagen Phil invites you to a festive yet deeply moving birthday concert featuring the very best music from Puccini’s La Bohème – expertly and entertainingly presented by Denmark’s all-knowing oracle of classical music, Mathias Hammer.
Puccini’s heartbreaking opera about the fragile Mimì in the bohemian artist circles of Paris is perhaps the ultimate opera. It contains everything one could wish for: joyful scenes, dramatic and vividly drawn characters, and above all, a great love story – which, of course, ends tragically. The music stands in a league of its own, and Puccini’s ever-changing score, where tempo and expression shift from bar to bar, has served as a shining inspiration for opera composers ever since its premiere.
Principal Conductor Christoph Gedschold is an expert in opera’s rich and colorful palette, and for this concert he has distilled Puccini’s tragic masterpiece to its very essence. Together with international stars Freddie De Tommaso as Rodolfo, Alexandra Oomens as Musetta and Nicole Car as the consumptive Mimì, he brings the opera’s greatest moments vividly to life.
And even though this concert does not feature a large chorus or lavish stage sets, we can promise that with such outstanding soloists – and with Mathias Hammer as our knowledgeable guide – the wonderfully sad story will unfold in all its emotional power. A story that must, of course, end with the eternally freezing Mimì succumbing to tuberculosis and dying in the arms of her beloved Rodolfo – while also finally answering those essential questions: Where exactly was that key? And can a fur muff really save a life?
The concert is presented in collaboration with Copenhagen Opera Festival and is also part of the Stellar Moments Festival.
