Program
Gustav Mahler (1860–1911): Symphony No. 3 in D minor (1896)
This season, Tivoli Copenhagen Phil invites you to an extraordinary experience — the classical world’s answer to a cinematic blockbuster: Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 3. It is a work that truly defies description; you simply have to be there — live in Tivoli Concert Hall — to feel how this vast creation of sound transforms something within you as its all-embracing sonorities unfold. Not only is Mahler’s Third the longest symphony ever written, with a duration of around one hour and forty-five minutes, it also calls for an orchestra nearly twice the normal size. To meet that challenge, the entire Odense Symphony Orchestra joins forces with Tivoli Copenhagen Phil, filling the stage of Tivoli Concert Hall to the brim — leaving scarcely enough room for the vocal soloist and the two choirs who also appear in this evening’s performance.
Mahler’s Third Symphony is a hymn to life and to creation itself. Before our very ears, he paints a universe in a thousand hues — a soundscape encompassing everything from the most fragile, chamber-like textures to monumental orchestral roars that resonate through the very core of the listener. We embark on a journey from the dawn of existence, through the awakening of nature, to the emergence of animals and humankind — and to our shared fear of what the end might bring — before love appears as the ultimate redeemer. The vast symphony closes in a radiant, enveloping sea of strings that often leaves audiences with tears streaming down their cheeks. Join us for a remarkable musical odyssey and experience a work that transcends all description — a symphony that promises to be nothing less than the experience of a lifetime.
