Travelling between New York’s Carnegie Hall and London’s Wigmore Hall, the Nordic region’s leading piano star has found a rare opening in his calendar to visit Tivoli Gardens with a solo programme. For decades, Leif Ove Andsnes has captivated audiences around the world with his finely chiselled interpretations and seemingly effortless virtuosity in the great piano repertoire, performed on the most prestigious stages. Yet his musical authority shines just as brightly in more intimate settings. In this programme, he invites his devoted audience on a journey that is at once playful and boundlessly expressive — deep into the concert grand’s rich spectrum of colours and sonorities.
Andsnes opens the evening with Schumann’s Four Piano Pieces, Op. 32, where the inward-looking poetry of Romanticism and sudden shifts of mood set the tone. The programme also includes a selection from György Kurtág’s Játékok — pianistic, political and deeply personal explorations of the black and white keys. With insatiable curiosity and a full arsenal of pianistic means, these miniature works probe the piano and its many facets. The second half of the concert is devoted to Chopin: first a selection of Mazurkas, followed by the complete 24 Preludes. This is music of extreme concentration, distilled to its expressive core — encompassing everything from heart-rending anguish to sublime beauty and breathtaking virtuosity.
