Travelling between Carnegie Hall in New York and Wigmore Hall in London, one of the brightest stars of the Nordic classical scene has found a rare pause in his schedule to visit Tivoli Gardens with his solo recital. For decades, Leif Ove Andsnes has captivated audiences around the world with his finely crafted interpretations and effortless virtuosity, performing the great piano concertos on the most prestigious stages with leading orchestras. Yet his musical depth comes through just as clearly in the intimacy of a solo recital. This year, he invites his audience on a playful and deeply expressive journey through the grand piano’s rich and varied sound world.

Andsnes treats us to all 24 of Chopin’s Preludes — music of striking concision and emotional range, encompassing everything from heart-rending pain to sublime beauty and breathtaking virtuosity. We will also experience a selection of György Kurtág’s pianistic, political, and deeply personal miniatures from Játékok (Hungarian for “Games”). Here, the musical toyshop truly opens as Andsnes, with boundless curiosity and the full range of pianistic means at his command, explores the instrument and its many facets in a work composed over four decades.
And finally, in the hands of this Norwegian piano magician, we hear Beethoven’s final piano sonata — the last of 32 iconic works that forever transformed the instrument and its expressive possibilities.
