Denmark’s Liberation in Tivoli

Lanterns in the Bubble Fountain in front of Nimb in Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli Gardens mark the 81st anniversary of Denmark’s liberation.

Denmark was liberated from occupation on 5 May 1945, bringing the Second World War to an end. It is tradition to commemorate this milestone by placing candles in windows on the evening of 4 May. This poignant custom will be brought to life in Tivoli Gardens, where light and illumination will take center stage throughout the evening of 4 May.

81 Lanterns at the Bubble Fountain
At the Bubble Fountain in front of Nimb, 81 lanterns will be displayed – one for each year Denmark has been free. The lanterns will be on view on both 4 and 5 May.

The Liberation Announcement, Torchlight Procession and Music by the Tivoli Youth Guard
At 20:35 on 4 May, the historic liberation announcement will be broadcast from the Open-Air Stage – exactly 81 years after it was first heard on the BBC. This will be followed by a moving torchlight procession through Tivoli Gardens, led by the Tivoli Youth Guard’s band and colour guard.

Guided Tours – Tivoli Gardens During the Occupation
Special guided tours will explore the history of Tivoli Gardens during the years of occupation. Tours will be offered on both 4 and 5 May. Tickets are not included in the entrance fee to Tivoli Gardens.
