Alisa Weilerstein

Bach’s Cello Suites with Alisa Weilerstein

Soloist: Alisa Weilerstein, cello

Program:

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750):

Suite No. 1 in G major for solo cello, BWV 1007 (1717)

Suite No. 2 in D minor for solo cello, BWV 1008 (c. 1720)

Suite No. 3 in C major for solo cello, BWV 1009 (c. 1720)

American cellist Alisa Weilerstein is one of the truly leading musicians of our time. On stage and online alike, she is renowned for her extraordinary emotional commitment and rare depth of interpretation, and she belongs to that small group of artists who appear only once in a generation – no one leaves a musical encounter with Alisa Weilerstein untouched. Her career has taken her to the world’s most prestigious concert halls, where she captivates audiences as both a soloist and chamber musician, while collaborating widely with leading composers, conductors and orchestras as she explores music from every era with boundless curiosity.

For this intimate concert in Tivoli’s magnificent hall, she takes the stage entirely alone, armed only with a selection of Bach’s cello suites. An entire evening in the company of this music becomes an experience almost beyond words, something at once all-encompassing and stripped to its core. This is spirituality given musical form. In Alisa Weilerstein’s hands, the cello speaks a language that is both deeply human and otherworldly, as the dark, wooden resonance of a centuries-old voice reaches out to us directly as modern listeners.

Each suite opens up a complete world: vast landscapes, lines of pure architectural clarity, solitary meditations and sudden bursts of light – all brought into being by a single cello, a single bow and a single body. In this encounter between Bach and Alisa Weilerstein, we are shown that everything can, indeed, be contained within one instrument.

Whether you come with a kindred spirit or on your own, let yourself be enveloped by an intense presence and a velvety tone in a truly magical concert experience at Tivoli Gardens.
