Denise Thimes and Tivoli Big Band

Tribute to Count Basie with Denise Thimes & Tivoli Big Band
Denise Thimes and Tivoli Big Band honor Count Basie’s timeless big band universe in the Glass Hall Theatre
Count Basie’s musical universe unfolds as Tivoli Big Band and the jazz vocalist Denise Thimes invite audiences into an evening shaped by swing, song and warm brass textures in the unmistakable Basie feel. Under the direction of bandleader Peter Jensen, the big band and Thimes dive into a repertoire rooted in some of the defining chapters of jazz history.
The evening’s soloist, Chicago‑based jazz singer Denise Thimes, has spent three decades shaping her place within the American vocal tradition, and her long‑standing work with The Count Basie Orchestra has given her a deep familiarity with Basie’s repertoire.
Thimes’ career spans New York club stages, European tours, and collaborations with prominent musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Clark Terry, Dr. Billy Taylor, and James Moody. She has also performed for Queen Elizabeth II, President George W. Bush, and Aretha Franklin, who personally selected her to perform at her 72nd birthday celebration.
In the Glass Hall Theatre, the big band’s precise brass section and rhythmic drive meet Thimes’ warm phrasing and elegant timing. Together, they bring new life to classics from the Basie catalogue – from refined ballads to energetic swing pieces that continue to inspire generations of musicians around the world.
