Sankt Annae Symfoniorkester

Saint Annæ Symphony Orchestra - Elgar, Kodaly and a first performance

Conductor: Carl-Oscar Østerlind

Programme:
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809–1847): Overture to the Hebrides
Sebastian Kierkegaard (b. 2005): Sounds of Conversations (world premiere, 10 min)
Edward Elgar (1857–1934): The Wand of Youth Suite
Zoltán Kodály (1882–1967): Háry János Suite

Sankt Annæ Symfoniorkester (SASO) was founded in 1995 to provide young musicians with a platform to perform orchestral music at the highest level.

A full-scale symphony orchestra, SASO consists of approximately 50 members between the ages of 15 and 22. Positions are filled through auditions, and while most members are students at Sankt Annæ Gymnasium (elementary and upper-secondary school), the orchestra also welcomes talented young musicians from outside the school.

Each year, SASO presents around eight concerts. A typical season features three concert series with diverse repertoires, including an autumn concert, a ballet performance, and a summer concert. Every other year, the orchestra embarks on a major tour.
Beyond its extensive concert activities in Denmark and abroad, SASO collaborates closely with the Royal Danish Ballet School, Tivoli Gardens, Malmö Latinskola, and the youth music organisation Musik & Ungdom.

Sebastian Kierkegaard will complete his studies in the conservatory preparatory program (MGK) at Sankt Annæ Gymnasium in the summer of 2025. His work, Sounds of Conversations, features solo performances by various members of the orchestra and explores the dynamic interplay between the instrumental voices.
Carl-Oscar Østerlind assumed the role of conductor and artistic director of Sankt Annæ Symfoniorkester in the autumn of 2023.

He has participated in the "Dirigentløftet" (Conductor Lift) career development program and has taken part in masterclasses with a number of international conductors, including Jorma Panula, Johannes Schlaeffli, Dmitry Matvienko, and Hartmut Haenchen. He has studied conducting with Henrik Vagn Christensen and Damian Iorio, among others.

As a cellist, Carl-Oscar has played in all the Danish symphony orchestras and ensembles. Most recently, he held positions as principal cellist with the symphony orchestras of Iceland, Aalborg, and Odense. He has also been a member of international chamber ensembles such as the Messiaen Quartet and the Danish String Quartet.
