A dramatic ballad for soloists, chorus, and orchestra
Niels W. Gade’s dramatic ballad The Elf King’s Daughter, Op. 30, is one of the most frequently performed Danish choral works. Since its premiere at the Musical Society in 1853, it has been cherished by both professional ensembles and— as in this concert— a large chorus of dedicated amateur singers.
The piece is inspired by the medieval Danish ballad of Hr. Oluf, who, on the night before his wedding—despite his mother’s warnings—rides out to invite one last guest. However, he is lured into a fateful dance at The Elf Hill, where the elf maidens enchant him with their magical song.
The concert opens with Mozart’s exquisite choral work Ave Verum, performed by both chorus and orchestra.
Koncertkor is an ad hoc ensemble assembled by conductor Niels Borksand for performances of major choral works. The chorus has previously presented Mozart’s Requiem, which is performed annually as a benefit concert for Doctors Without Borders.
Following a long career as an actor and opera singer, including 15 years at the Pantomime Theatre in Tivoli Gardens, Niels Borksand transitioned to conducting in 2004 after pursuing private studies. He has since led numerous concerts in Denmark, Greenland, and Bulgaria, where he has also recorded several CDs. His recordings feature music by composers such as Wagner, Mahler, and Hakon Børresen, including Kaddara, an opera with a Greenlandic narrative.
In 2013, he conducted Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen in Jonathan Dove’s adaptation at Christian’s Church in Christianshavn, Copenhagen. The production was staged by and starred Royal Danish Chamber Singer Stig Fogh Andersen in the principal roles.
This year marks Stig Fogh Andersen’s 50th anniversary as an opera singer, celebrating a career as a Wagnerian heroic tenor that has taken him to the world’s most prestigious opera houses. In this concert, he performs the role of Hr. Oluf, a man drawn into the supernatural with tragic consequences.
The critically acclaimed alto Elisabeth Hanke, renowned for her dramatic voice, portrays Hr. Oluf’s mother. The role of the Elf King’s seductive daughter is performed by Danish-Canadian soprano Cassandra Lemoine.
The concert opens with W.A. Mozart’s Ave Verum, performed by chorus and orchestra.
