Ferruccio Busoni’s Piano Concerto is one of the most extraordinary works of its kind—a monumental masterpiece created by a composer, educator, conductor, arranger, piano virtuoso, writer, scholar, and philosophical thinker.
This grandiose concerto is remarkable in many ways—not least for its sheer scale, both in length and artistic vision. It is also distinguished by its choral finale and the way the piano functions as an integrated part of the orchestra rather than a conventional solo instrument. The technical and artistic demands, particularly for the soloist, are immense. Yet, 20-year-old piano prodigy Jonas Hasager Emtkjær Jensen has risen to the challenge with remarkable confidence. The five movements, varying in mood and tempo, are expertly guided by the seasoned Estonian conductor Kaisa Roose.
Jonas Hasager Emtkjær Jensen is a 20-year-old pianist currently studying under Bella Zapolski at Copenhagen’s MGK. He began playing the piano in 2018 at the age of 13—initially teaching himself before starting formal lessons a year later. His combination of passion and dedication has led to impressive achievements, earning him awards at both national and international piano competitions.
Kaisa Roose was born in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1969, during the country’s difficult years under Soviet rule. The collapse of the Soviet Union allowed her to pursue further studies in choral and orchestral conducting at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. She began her conducting career at the Royal Danish Theatre and has since conducted all regional orchestras in Denmark.
Amatørsymfonikerne is a full-scale symphony orchestra founded in 1954. Several composers, including Anders Koppel, have written works for the ensemble, while leading conductors such as Ole Schmidt, Leif Segerstam, Jorma Panula, and Michael Schønwandt have taken the podium. The orchestra has collaborated with renowned international soloists, including Arthur Grumiaux and Wandy Tworek, and has performed in England, France, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Malta, the Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, and most recently, the Faroe Islands.
