Fireworks in Tivoli Gardens

Magical fireworks in Tivoli Gardens

Since Tivoli's very first season in 1843, the Gardens' impressive fireworks displays have been a special attraction. Over the years, it has become a colourful tradition in the Copenhagen night sky, used to mark New Year's Eve, Tivoli's birthday, and even a royal succession in Denmark.

The fireworks show can be enjoyed from various locations around the Gardens, including the Open-Air Stage, in front of the Glass Hall Theatre, and near Nimb.

    A longstanding tradition

Fireworks have a long and fascinating history in Tivoli Gardens. Before the Gardens even opened in 1843, founder Georg Carstensen used "Bengal flame" displays to attract visitors. At that time, fireworks were manufactured near the city’s old moat, and launched from a platform outside the Gardens. This was essential due to safety concerns: fireworks couldn’t be transported long distances, nor could they be set off amidst the crowds.

These fireworks displays were held on special festive evenings, accompanied by brilliant illuminations throughout the Gardens. Buildings, trees, and flowerbeds were adorned with glowing oil lamps, each requiring individual lighting by hand. This elaborate process culminated in a dazzling fireworks finale. Gaëtano Amici, a pyrotechnician invited from Italy by Carstensen himself, became Tivoli’s first resident fireworks expert.
Fireworks are an integral part of the entertainment in Tivoli Gardens, primarily featured during the summer season. Guests can witness spectacular fireworks shows choreographed to classical music.
