The Gardens

Tivoli continues a beautiful tradition when the Tivoli Youth Guard and the attendants perform Tappenstreg (the Tattoo) as they parade through the Gardens on the last day of the summer season, Sunday 22 September at 9.00 - 9.30 p.m.

The tradition of the Tattoo goes right back to the middle of the seventeenth century, when a special division of soldiers went around pubs and inns at closing time.
They closed the taps on the beer barrels or closed the line to the tank cork when the soldiers were heading back to their quarters and to their berths.
Fifteen minutes later, Lights Out sounded from the barracks, and it was night.

In the evening, the Tivoli Youth Guard will perform a special parade with the attendants and the Trolley Bus.
For the oldest Guard members, it is their last evening as part of the Tivoli Youth Guard.
Together with the attendants, they carry the torches that light the parade, the visitors and the buildings.
To add to the atmosphere, restaurants and shops switch out their lights as the Tattoo passes.

The Tattoo starts by Plænen, the open air stage, and begins with the Lights Out played.
