Tivoli has presented a new project: Tivoli Edge which envisages the development of that part of Tivoli which runs along Bernstorffsgade. Tivoli Edge creates new dynamics between Tivoli and the city in an area where the connection lines have been cut for many years. The vision was developed in cooperation with the world-renowned US architectural firm of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners.
Tivoli is endeavouring to create more year-round activity in the company. This includes investments in a project, Tivoli Edge, i.e. concerning Tivoli's somewhat neglected 'back area' overlooking Bernstorffsgade and the Central Station.
”For many years now we have endeavoured to create year-round activities in Tivoli, and in continuation of those efforts we are now presenting our vision of how to develop the western edge of Tivoli. With Tivoli Edge we wish to revitalise Tivoli and the area along Bernstorffsgade by joining Tivoli and the city in an innovative and exciting way. We want to create life in that part of the city all year round, thereby making Tivoli a must-visit destination – even in the Tivoli off season", explains Lars Liebst, managing director of Tivoli, and he continues:
”We have allied ourselves with one of the world's leading architectural firms, and we believe it is time for Tivoli to meet the city in Bernstorffsgade”.
Architecture
Phase 1 stretches from the corner of Vesterbrogade to Nimb, but the completed Tivoli Edge is intended to run the entire length of Bernstorffsgade, round the corner at Tietgensgade to the Concert Hall.
A glass façade facing the city undulates along the pavement. This creates places to linger and a varied architectural expression. The façade is interrupted by the existing older buildings in Tivoli: the main entrance and Nimb in phase 1 and, once phase 2 is completed, the yellow building (called Vise Vers Huset or Bernstorff Huset). Smøgen (the Alley), which was established in 1952, will continue to run along the yellow building despite the changes. The three-story building is crowned by green roof gardens. Facing Tivoli the height of the building varies and the façade is broken by several decks and terraces. The surface of the façade is inspired by the red and yellow tiles of the main entrance. The US architectural firm of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners was selected because of its building experience in areas that are especially sensitive due to a unique history and location. Indeed, I.M. Pei, one of the founders of the firm, is the architect behind the famous pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Content
Tivoli Edge will comprise a universe of experiences, including cafés, restaurants, shops and services in keeping with Tivoli's traditions. This means that the building project will offer something unique, original and of quality in each area, providing Tivoli's visitors with wonderful experiences. The recently opened Nimb is a good example of this. Today, the famous Moorish complex offers everything from a dairy and a delicatessen to a hotel and several restaurants. And this is all based on a simple concept: high quality and focus on Danish products. The plan for the new building thus envisages new eating concepts, cultural events and shops featuring design, art and family-oriented products - just like we know it from Tivoli today. And just as is the case with Tivoli today, multiplicity and quality will be key. Visitors will experience a great diversity of supply and content with units of many different sizes and offering many different experiences.
Process
The Tivoli Edge project is based on three assumptions: The right mixture of tenants must be found to ensure the quality known from Tivoli today. The project construction economy must be commercially viable. And last but not least, the project must be politically approved.Tivoli Edge will now be submitted for administrative approval, including a local plan for the area.If the project is approved by the local authorities, detailed plans must be made before construction can begin. Consequently, we should not expect to be able to visit the first phase of Tivoli Edge until 2012.
