Tivoli and the climate
During the first few months of the summer season, a giant wind turbine will be a feature of Tivoli, erected in cooperation with Vestas to mark the year of the UN Climate Change Conference Copenhagen 2009.Tivoli is also partnering with DONG Energy on projects to reduce electricity consumption in the Gardens.
The first results of our efforts to save energy are already evident, as LED lights have been fitted to the Chinese Pagoda to replace the filament bulbs, and the same applies to the Hanging Gardens and the square in front of the Pantomime Theatre. 2,800 15W bulbs on the Chinese Pagoda were replaced by 1.6W bulbs, with a further 900 in the Hanging Gardens.
More ways of saving energy at Tivoli will be identified in the near future. As an experiment, Line 8 will be running on rapeseed oil instead of diesel, and Tivoli has installed a solar panel system for recharging the electrical cars used in the Gardens. More ways of protecting the environment and climate will definitely be tried out in the future at Tivoli.
Tivoli has operated a systematic environmental management system since 1996, and has introduced good habits and procedures into every part of the organisation since that time. Tivoli is concentrating its environmental efforts on energy, waste, traffic, water and chemicals. With refuse, Tivoli is applying well-known solutions such as sorting at source and recycling. We are particularly proud of the recycling scheme with a deposit on plastic glasses, cups and mugs, which when returned to the vending machines automatically refunds the deposit. They are then collected and washed in Tivoli's own washing plant in order to quickly return them to circulation. When it comes to chemicals, over half of the cleaning products we use at Tivoli have the Swan mark (Nordic environment mark). The personnel using chemicals help to identify and find the products they work with, ensuring motivation to use more environment-friendly cleaning agents. Tivoli has also reduced the use of chemical fertilisers, weedkillers and pesticides used in the Gardens to an absolute minimum.
