Milestones
With its history beginning in 1843, there are many milestones along the way. One is the 1888 exhibition, which marks a new era for Tivoli with a new lay-out and many new features.
After a successful period for Tivoli during World War I, public opinion turned against Tivoli in the 1930s. People felt that an amusement park was the wrong use of this centrally located plot of land; why not build a modern conference centre or something like that.
World War II changed that. Tivoli managed to stay open despite black-outs and curfews and became a popular meeting place during the German occupation of Denmark. When Tivoli celebrated its centenial on 15 August 1943 visitor numbers reached 112.802, - the largest number of visitors ever in one day.
