Tivoli– summer 2007

Tivoli opened in April to a season including a new children’s ride, a ballet with scenography by Queen Margrethe, the 10th anniversary of Friday Rock and a star-studded string of concerts in the Concert Hall.

Tivolifor adventurers

The Merry Corner in Tivoli is slowly developing into a world for adventurers and globetrotters. Last year, the Star Flyer, in a tribute to Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, sent Tivoli’s adventurous guests on an expedition at a height of 80 metres. In the summer of 2007, the Merry Corner will offer an opportunity to explore the deep of the sea with the new children’s carousel called Nautilus that is inspired by the Jules Verne novel ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’.

The carousel is shaped as a giant octopus surrounded by 12 small submarines. Future little Nemos (Nautilus was the name of Captain Nemo’s large submarine) will be able to adjust the height of the submarines circling round the octopus. The idea is to avoid the water surging up under the submarines that are also shrouded in an impressive amount of steam.

Tivoli’s old Bumper Cars will reopen under the theme of exploration, perhaps a journey to the interior of the earth? In any case, the Bumper Cars have been turned into imaginative vehicles with fins and wings, so welcome to one of Tivoli’s most popular rides, and don’t forget to fasten your seatbelts.

The Queen creates costumes and set design for the Pantomime Theatre

H.M. Queen Margrethe’s third performance as a scenographer at the Pantomime Theatre will be The Tinder Box which opens on 14 July 2007 at 8.30 p.m. The Queen resumes her collaboration with choreographer Dinna Bjørn and composer James Price. This is also the trio behind the performances of Love in the Dustbin from 2001 and Thumbelina from 2005.

Friday Rock celebrates its 10th anniversary

Since the summer of 1997, Tivoli has presented Danish and foreign rock music on Plænen – the Open Air Stage every Friday evening. The celebration of the 10th anniversary of Friday Rock this year includes a concert with the British duo Pet Shop Boys.

Over the years, artists such as Sting, Thomas Helmig, Mariah Carey, Beach Boys, TV 2, Kim Larsen, Lisa Ekdahl and many more have performed for large and enthusiastic audiences. So large that today, Friday Rock is undoubtedly Copenhagen’s biggest music event. The anniversary will be marked by a big anniversary concert on Friday, 22 June at 10 p.m., and 21 other exciting concerts throughout the summer. Friday Rock takes place every Friday at 10 p.m. from 13 April to 21 September (except during the Jazz Festival on 6 and 13 July).

The entire Friday Rock programme will be published on 28 March 2007.

The Tivoli Concert Hall

Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter is the soloist in a large-scale gala concert on 10 June in the Tivoli Concert Hall when the Queen Ingrid Honorary Prize will be awarded once again to two talented young artists in the fields of classical music and ballet. Members of the Royal Family will attend the concert, and tickets are also available to the public.

On 24 June, Helmuth Rilling will conduct Haydn’s The Creation with Thomas Quasthoff singing the bass part. The 4’4” world bass-baritone is accompanied by soprano Klara Ek and tenor Marcel Reijans.

Tivoliplays host to a musical summit with political undertones when Israel meets Palestine on 15 September in the Concert Hall. The recognised Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) and its chief conductor Zubin Mehta will perform a German programme featuring Palestinian Saleem Abboud Ashkar as soloist.

So far, the rock concert programme includes two strong women: Rickie Lee Jones who will be giving a concert on 27 April, and Macy Gray who will be appearing on stage on 30 May. On May 27 Bryan Ferry performs.

Throughout the summer the Concert Hall will present classical, rock and jazz concerts almost every evening. The programme is available on koncertsalen.tivoli.dk

Perlen remains Danish

Perlen, the Tivoli restaurant so rich in tradition has been taken over by the Danish TV cook known as The Bald Cook. He is unusual looking with his bald pate and many tattoos, but he loves to prepare good Danish food ranging from open sandwiches to hot dishes. And that is exactly what he will be serving at Perlen, which will also keep its summery, open appearance.
