H.C. Andersen & Tivoli

H.C. Andersen knew Tivoli very well, he was a friend of Tivoli’s founder, Georg Carstensen, and was greatly inspired by the Chinese buildings and the gardens when he wrote “The Nightingale” in just two days. This is why Tivoli finds it natural to participate in the celebration of the writer’s bicentenary.

For 2005 Tivoli has planned several big events to celebrate Hans Christian Andersen.

A new ballet based on Hans Christian Andersen´s fairy tale Thumbelina, produced for the Pantomime Theatre (The Peacock Theatre), where HM Queen Margrethe will be the Artistic Director, in charge of the production’s scenography and costumes.Thumbelina will premiere on 14 July 2005. In August the Pantomime Theatre will celebrate Hans Christian Andersen with a two week long cavalcade featuring three different Andersen fairytales, Thumbelina, Love in a dustbin, and The Princess and the Pea.

From May and onwards you may experience A Tivoli Fairy Talea spectacular ’show’, best described a an extravaganza of puppets, light, music, pyrotecnics and special effects: every night after dusk 5-metre tall brightly shining puppets will move from the fountain by the Concert Hall to the Open Air Stage on a podium on which Tivoli’s guest also will see dancers, hear newly composed music, story-telling and fireworks. The spectacular puppets each represent a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale and the guests will enter the Hans Christian Andersen universe, watching the show float by accompanied by the storytellers reciting the enticing stories. A Tivoli Fairy Tale is premiered on 14 May and runs every night except Fridays.

The Flying Trunk
Tivoli has one ride dedicated to Andersen: The Flying Trunk. The Flying Trunk depicts 32 scenes from the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Guess which fairy tales they are while you enjoy the ride and let yourself enter this charming world. Build in 1993.
